My collaboration with the amateur theatre group Menecmos goes far beyond simply taking photographs. I don’t just photograph the cast: I work side by side with them, share their passion and experience every project from the inside. I met them because my wife is part of the group, but they have quickly become my friends too.
Menecmos is a multi-award-winning group, recognised in practically every competition in which it takes part. Their standards and quality are exceptionally high: they pay attention to every detail, from the scripts and costumes to the set design and, of course, the acting. Their work is on a par with any professional company.
From the first time I saw them on stage, I knew there was incredible material there for photography. I will always be grateful to them for their dedication to amateur theater and for the opportunity to capture their work from such close up.
I have been fortunate enough to participate with them in the ESCENAMATEUR Juan Mayorga Performing Arts Awards, one of the most important recognitions for amateur theater in Spain.
I won the award for Best Photography in the 2009 edition, was a finalist in 2020, and this year I am nominated again for the 2025 edition, whose awards will be presented on June 20, 2026, in Getxo (Vizcaya).
Photography in the performing arts is not simply a visual record: it is an extension of the theatrical act itself. Theater lives in the moment, in the actors’ breath, in the changing light, in the gesture that only happens once. When used with sensitivity and an understanding of the creative process, the camera becomes a tool capable of preserving that fleeting moment without betraying it. Good theater photography doesn’t just show what happens on stage; it reveals the atmosphere, the tension, the inner poetry of the work.
In groups like Menecmos, where each production is crafted with extraordinary detail and dedication, photography acquires both documentary and artistic value. It allows the work to transcend the performance, reach new audiences, and stand as a testament to a collective process brimming with talent.
Photographing theater is, in a way, participating in it. It’s listening to the rhythm of the scene, anticipating the gesture, respecting the silence, understanding the light. That’s why, for me, accompanying Menecmos isn’t just about taking pictures: it’s about becoming part of their creative universe and contributing to their work’s lasting impact beyond the curtain.
