My other great passion…
– Nature – that too drew me into the world of photography: everything I saw in the countryside simply had to look brilliant on photographic paper – although it later turned out to be far more complicated than my youthful enthusiasm had led me to believe. In fact, for a long time I wondered whether I was a nature-mad person who took photos or a camera-mad person who went out into the countryside. In the end, it’s turned out to be a dead heat, although the bulk of my portfolio still consists of wildlife.
In recent years I’ve started to explore other subjects: I’ve become involved – or rather, I’ve been drawn into – projects in theatre, fashion, historical re-enactments and cosplay – mainly steampunk – and the truth is it’s been a real treat. Each of these activities has its own particularities, requirements and codes. Understanding them and being able to capture them is a fascinating adventure.
This latter aspect has had a significant impact on how I interpret photography today. At first, my photography was essentially reactive: capturing what was in front of me, adapting to what was happening and being quick enough to seize those unique moments in nature.
When I began taking on more artistic projects, my perspective changed. I remember some wonderful conversations with J.C., a great friend and, in many ways, a mentor, during which we realised that what I was facing was what experts call the ‘creative process’: the journey from imagining an image, shaping it in your mind, and finally bringing it to life through the camera. That moment marked a turning point in my understanding of photography. The preparatory sessions, thinking through the lighting, working with the models and the make-up and costume teams, the conceptual discussions and reaching common ground have led me to discover a world that never ceases to amaze me.
What’s more, I’ve been fortunate enough to share experiences and, in some cases, collaborate with photographers who have helped me grow immensely. Oriol, Gabi, Izaskun and Julia are not only role models but also good friends, and that is a tremendous gift.
As I finish writing this, I realise that, for me, photography is a way of looking at and interpreting the world; it is my artistic language. It is simply another way of expressing myself – and the most personal one.
Those who know me say about me…
